The sun was shining as South Elementary preschool classes headed to the Plymouth waterfront on May 24th for a day of exploration. They worked with a partner on a scavenger hunt as they walked along the waterfront and through Brewster Gardens to the Jenny Grist Mill. At Jenny Pond, the children gathered to discuss their findings. "During the past week, we have been learning about towns, and specifically some of the things they might see in their hometown of Plymouth," teacher Christine Blanchard said. "In addition to reading books and building vocabulary about towns, some of the activities have been following a simple map around the classroom at the motor center and building houses at the art center."

From the comforts of the classroom, students are following the Admiral's Blog about life with MMA cadets on the Training Ship Kennedy for the Sea Term that runs from Jan. 1 to Feb. 22. "They give us great information about the places they visit," second grade teacher Mrs. Close says of the daily blog. "The kids are researching each of the four destinations - Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and St. Thomas. We even got to watch the ship sail through the Panama Canal on live webcam." Teachers summarize the information and apply it to lessons in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The blog chronicles a range of events. One entry, for example, focused on how ships protect the ecosystems by following MARPOL (Maritime Pollution…
