Calter Beats Betz

State Rep. Tom Calter wins a third term against Plymouth's Debra Betz.

Democrat Tom Calter has defeated Republican Debra Betz for a third term representing the 12th Plymouth District in the state House of Representatives. The race was never close, not even in Betz's home base of Plymouth. Calter was first elected in 2006, when he ran a write-in campaign after former State Rep. Tom O'Brien decided to step down in order to take a position as Plymouth County Treasurer. Here are the results according to the Associated Press, as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

League of Women Voters Hosting Legislative Debates

The Plymouth Area League of Women Voters is hosting a debate among Christopher Sheldon, Bill Keating, and Daniel Botelho Wednesday.

The Plymouth Area League of Women Voters is sponsoring two candidate debates this election season. The 9th Congressional District Debate is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 10 at the Duxbury Senior Center, 10 Mayflower St., Duxbury. Representative Bill Keating (D-Bourne), Republican Christopher Sheldon of Plymouth, and Independent Daniel Botelho of Fall River, will be participating. Dr. Kathleen Leslie will moderate. Dear Editor, As a member of the Plymouth Board of Selectman I have had the opportunity to work with Representative Tom Calter on a variety of issues impacting our community. I have always found Rep. Calter readily available to discuss a variety of issues and concerns in a calm and thoughtful manner. Plymouth Legislators Decry Pilgrim Lockout

Senate President Therese Murray and Representatives Thomas Calter and Vinny deMacedo say Entergy's move to lock-out workers "serves only to undermine the security of the plant."

Plymouth legislators are decrying Entergy's decision to lock-out union workers today after the two sides failed to come to an agreement on a new contract last night. Monday at midnight was the end of the 10-day extension the two sides had agreed upon to negotiate a new contract. The previous four-year contract ended May 25. Last night Entergy escorted union workers from Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, according to accounts on both sides. Today, members of UWUA Local 369 are picketing outside the plant. Plymouth Legislators Fight for Funding for Plymouth Jail

Tom Calter, D-Kingston, was among the group that organized an emergency State House meeting to address the issue of the financial deficit associated with the budget deficit at the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department and County Jail.

State Representatives Thomas D. Calter (D-Kingston) and Rhonda Nyman (D-Hanover) organized and chaired an emergency State House meeting on Wednesday to address the issue of the financial deficit associated with the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department and House of Correction FY12 budget. Representatives Calter and Nyman were joined by other state representatives from Plymouth County, as well as police chiefs from many of the 26 towns in the county. Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph MacDonald provided an analysis of the Sheriff’s Department and House of Correction FY12 budget, and the consequences related to the lack of funding. Citizens Bank presented 40 bikes to children at the Plymouth Boys & Girls Club Friday with Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth, and State Rep. Tom Calter, D-Kingston, in an effort to promote healthy activities and exercise in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs “Whole Child” model.

Plymouth Resident Debra Betz Enters State Rep. Race

School Committee member Debra Betz is running for state representative of the 12th Plymouth district, which includes Kingston, Halifax and Plympton, along with precincts in Plymouth, Middleborough and Duxbury.

Debra Betz announced her Republican candidacy for State Representative in the 12th Plymouth district to a crowd of supporters at the Royal Garden in Kingston.   Currently, Betz is an elected member of the Plymouth School Committee, and former chairman. She ran two successful campaigns for her school committee seat, and was the top vote getter in 2007 in a highly contested race. She ran unopposed in 2010.
