Screaming for Ice Cream in the Pinehills

Let's Scream 4 Ice Cream opens for the summer in the Pinehills.

Nothing says summer more than a drippy ice cream cone and Plymouth's newest ice cream shop just opened for business. Let's Scream 4 Ice Cream opened May 4 in the Pinehills Village Green. The shop offers more than just 18 flavors of ice cream, according to owner and Plymouth resident Anthony Apicella. The shop also offers low-fat frozen yogurt, sundaes, milkshakes, sherbert, and the New England standard: frappes. Apicella grew up in a family of restaurateurs and cooks, and following a long career as a manager for various biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, has decided to pursue his passion for the culinary arts. He selected ice cream, since it's his 7-year-old son, Austin’s, favorite treat. “Coming from a family that has always had …

Plymouth Upper Crust Owners Pull Out of New Hingham Location

The Peel Pizza Company, formerly Upper Crust, located on South Street, is expected to open later this month.

While no pizza has been served out of 73 South Street in Hingham since the Upper Crust closed last fall, there have been three owners and two names. The latest tenant, Peel Pizza Company, is expected to open in two to three weeks. The Hingham store closed when Upper Crust filed for bankruptcy. The lease and equipment were sold at auction in December for $70,000 to Al Carvelli, the owner of the Upper Crust location in Plymouth. Carvelli, a Hingham resident, planned to reopen the Hingham shop as Upper Crust. On February 28, however, Carvelli said he sold the operation to a "finance guy" from Connecticut. Carvelli would not say who bought the restaurant that he owned, but never opened. "I have no interest in it," Carvelli said of the Hingham …

I'm amazed that the Plymouth Upper Crust is still open. Last time we were in there was Thanksgiving Parade 2012. We ate lunch at the counter; the pizza was served cold. When they reheated it, it became hard. I asked for a glass of water, and I was given a tiny Dixie cup of water. I am not kidding. We have never returned.   more ›

Prepping Plymouth for Summer: Cafe Nicole Waits for Warmer Weather

Shops in Plymouth are getting ready for the warmer months.

Last year around this time, snow was out of mind and out of sight and Plymouth restaurants like Carmen's Cafe Nicole already featured patio setups. This year, Tamara Thomson, the owner's sister, said the cafe is still waiting. "We're pretty seasonal here," Thomson said. To get ready for tourist season, the restaurant has overhauled its breakfast menu. In addition to breakfast, Cafe Nicole serves a lunch menu with fresh seafood, signature salads and other healthy options.

Prepping Plymouth for Summer: Soft as a Grape Builds New Entrance

Shops in Plymouth are getting ready for the warmer months.

As summer nears and temperatures slowly rise, shops throughout downtown Plymouth are using the final weeks to get ready for tourist season. At Soft As A Grape on Water Street, manager Amanda Roy said the retail store is constructing a third entrance, facing the street prominently to add visibility. The store spent about 10 years in Plymouth before leaving for two years. It returned a year ago. Soft As A Grape offers clothing, jewelry and other accessories, and also custom printing. As for the fast approaching summer months? "We're getting there, we're not quite ready for it," Roy said.

Visions for Vacancies: 18 Court St.

What would you like to see in the space formerly occupied by The Chocolate Bar?

The Chocolate Bar of Plymouth closed its Court Street location several months ago and plans to move to a new storefront at some point. In the meantime, however, Downtown Plymouth has to deal with the vacant storefront; one of several vacancies noticed as this reporter walked Downtown on a gorgeous Spring afternoon Tuesday. According to one source on the Plymouth Center Steering Committee, a hookah bar wants to open in the space, down the street from Brennan's Smoke Shop. What kind of business do you think should be at 18 Court Street? Share your vision with your neighbors by posting in the comments below.

Mayflower Brewing Company Expands in Tough Times

President Franklin Roosevelt let the taps flow in 1933 hoping to grow industry and create jobs. In 2012, Mayflower Brewing Company is creating jobs as it expands.

During the height of the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt signed an amendment that effectively ended the Nineteenth Amendment prohibiting the manufacturing and sale of alcohol. Repealing Prohibition would, Roosevelt believed, help spur job creation, and to a certain extent it did as Roosevelt himself encouraged the consumption of libations as he signed the Cullen-Harrison Act into law: “I think this would be a good time for a beer.” About 70 or so years later, the idea has legs, and Mayflower Brewing Company, a microbrewery located in the Plymouth Industrial Park exemplifies it on the local level.
