Let's Scream 4 Ice Cream opens for the summer in the Pinehills.
Nothing says summer more than a drippy ice cream cone and Plymouth's newest ice cream shop just opened for business. Let's Scream 4 Ice Cream opened May 4 in the Pinehills Village Green. The shop offers more than just 18 flavors of ice cream, according to owner and Plymouth resident Anthony Apicella. The shop also offers low-fat frozen yogurt, sundaes, milkshakes, sherbert, and the New England standard: frappes. Apicella grew up in a family of restaurateurs and cooks, and following a long career as a manager for various biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, has decided to pursue his passion for the culinary arts. He selected ice cream, since it's his 7-year-old son, Austin’s, favorite treat. “Coming from a family that has always had …

The owners of the 94-year-old John Alden Gift Shop opens a new bar.
“Hi, I’d like to speak with the owner.” “Laurie. She’s in the gift shop next store.” “Hi, I’d like to speak with Laurie.” “Oh, I think she in the gift shop on the other side of Pebbles.” “Hi, are you Laurie?” “I am.” “You own all these stores?” “With my father and brother, yes.” Those tourist gift shops across from Mayflower II? One family owns all three. Jack Parsons and his daughter, Laurie Gibbs, have owned and operated Mayflower General Store, the John Alden Gift Shop and the Town Crier for years. “The Mayflower General Store has food and is a little more upscale,” Laurie said. “The Town Crier has things like the hermit crabs and kids clothing. The John Alden has the widest variety.” The John Alden is the oldest. It had a likeness, …

Two longtime friends and business partners have breathed new life into one of Plymouth's historic gems.
Pizza, wings, beer and good times are to be found at Lucioso's Pub at the Jenney Grist Mill. John Luce and Gabriel Daher's new restaurant takes the place of the Run of the Mill Tavern, which closed last year. Daher described the restaurant as having "a unique personality." Green and orange are the signature colors. Metal frogs stand at attention atop the fireplace, which, as Luce explains, echoes his interest in frogs and lizards and things. He was even the inspiration for Lucioso's mascot, a goteed, backwards cap-wearing cartoon frog indulging in pizza and beer. Pizza varieties here include bacon cheeseburger, pulled pork and hot pastrami, with Swiss, onions and honey mustard. There are more than 25 flavors of wings and tenders, like …

After a long absence, Honey Dew returns to Plymouth, bringing with it cinnamon sticks and pistachio nut muffins.
Drivers and passersby on Main Street Extension downtown this week saw an odd sight: a life-sized coffee cup, with hands and legs, waving to all. To fans of Honey Dew Donuts, though, it was a sign that the local coffee and bakery chain is now closer to home. Honey Dew takes over the space formerly occupied by Dunkin' Donuts at 15 Main St. Extension after years away from town. Locals will remember that the company once operated in North Plymouth and at the Hess gas station. The closest locations have been in Carver and Buzzards Bay. That is exactly why Honey Dew decided to return, Carlos Mota, the owner of the Plymouth location, tells. He believes Plymouth is an "untapped area" ripe for expansion. With the Wednesday opening of his shop, he …

Come for the beer and stay for the food and music at this downtown establishment specializing in craft beers from near and far.
"How do you know you don't like Brussels sprouts unless you try them?," parents so often say. Karl Heine takes a similar approach when it comes to his business. People may be unaware that they are craft beer drinkers, the co-owner of the recently opened New World Tavern at 56 Main St., argues. So he invites them to come by and join other beer lovers, and "discover a world of beer." With 32 beers on tap and over 120 bottled varieties, there is "something for everybody,"Heine said. The draught selection runs the whole gamut, from Mayflower Thanksgiving Ale and Woodchuck Hard Cider to Wachusett Blueberry and Anderson Valley Oatmeal Stout. The New World Tavern, located in the former home of Guru Indian Grille, Music and Bar, is an "upscale …

An introduction to Brazilian cuisine or an indulgence in something familiar is to be had at the most recent addition to Plymouth's ethnic dining scene.
More and more, today's restaurants are opting to give diners the most choices, partly through their extensive menus. Trouble is, many sit down and cannot decide what to order. Chicken or pork? Steak or seafood? At Rio's Steak House in North Plymouth, however, you can have one of everything. This new establishment specializes in rodizio, which is a style of dining in which servers bring various grilled meats on skewers to the table. At Rio's, sirloin, pork, sausage, chicken and lamb are offered individually to customers continuously, according to manager Marla Dasilva. "For meat lovers, it's a great place to be," she said. In addition to the rodizio, there is an all-you-can-eat salad bar and hot buffet, all for one price. While the hot …

Let your inner crazy loose at this newly-opened restaurant and bar on the waterfront, while digging into all kinds of topsy-turvy foods and reveling in the live entertainment.
Once seated at Crazy Eddie's American Bar & Grill, the first thing you will notice is the panoramic view of Plymouth Harbor, courtesy of a continuous set of windows running the entire length of the dining area. This gives the restaurant, located at 6 Town Wharf in the building which formerly housed Weathervane Seafood Restaurant, an open and airy feel, and the sight of docks and boats matches a menu full of seafood. It's a "spectacular view from almost every seat in the house," general manager Cheryl Anusewicz said. Add the fact that Eddie's serves the "freshest seafood," straight from the boats into the kitchen, and you have the recipe for a classic New England eatery. Crazy Eddie's opened Oct. 6. Locals and visitors alike may be curious …

I've known Laurie for years. She was an active supporter of efforts to improve tourism in Plymouth, attending countless meetings of Tourism Committees, Downtown Merchant Groups and Tourism Summits. Her family has been invested in this effort for many years. My wife and I stopped in last night and were fortunate enough to get a couple of the chairs facing the Mayflower and the harbor. There was a …   more ›
