Congressman Bill Keating says NStar needs to do a better job when it comes to providing customers with restoration times.
Congressman Keating toured the shelter at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School Monday with Governor Deval Patrick and other Cape lawmakers. During a press briefing after the tour, Keating said it’s vital for customers to know when their power will be restored. “The frustration, which I share about NStar, is the level of public information that they are sharing with the public. People worried if their pipes are freezing would like to know if the service is estimated two or three days. That would help make a decision for them about sealing off the water,” Keating said. Keating said he spoke with children of elderly parents who were having difficulty convincing them to move to a shelter. Keating said if those individuals knew they would …

Though hazardous weather and driving conditions have continued to hamper power restoration efforts, NSTAR is working to assess damage to its electric system as it prepares to dispatch repair crews as soon as it is safe to do so. Due to the significant amount of work ahead, the company is warning customers of a multi-day restoration effort with lengthy power outages. “This blizzard has caused devastating damage to our electric system in the southern part of our service area and we are working to push forward with our restoration effort as soon as it’s possible to do so,” said Craig Hallstrom, President of NSTAR Electric. “Before the storm hit we enlisted the aid of hundreds of outside resources and hundreds more are joining us from areas …

NSTAR has activated its emergency response plan as preparations continue for a significant impact on the electric grid, according to a release from the utility. The company is advising customers to make advanced preparations as well. While no utility can prevent widespread power outages in the face of devastating storms, NSTAR is on high alert and workers are prepared to mobilize. “We’re well into our preparations for responding to potentially widespread power outages resulting from the nor’easter’s high winds and heavy snow,” said Craig Hallstrom, President of NSTAR Electric. “We prepare year-round for storms like this and stand ready to address damage to our system as soon as it becomes safe to do so.” As all 3,000 NSTAR employees …

NStar was fined $4 million in responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm, but already announced it plans to appeal.
The state on Tuesday ordered a total of $24.8 million in penalties to utility companies for their response to storms in 2011. Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan joined Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Chairman Ann Berwick and DPU commissioners today to announce the findings of the DPU’s investigation into responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm. Provided the penalties hold up, customers should see a reduction in their bill, though it is unclear how much, officials said. National Grid faces the steepest penalty, at $18.725 million; NSTAR has been ordered to pay $4.075 million; and Western Massachusetts Electric Company to pay $2 million. Recognizing that outages are …

NSTAR says power was be restored at 3 p.m.
NSTAR officials say power was restored at 3 p.m. today. ---- A lightning strike knocked out power to 1,700 customers in Plymouth this morning and shut down the Manomet Transfer Station. "This is a very labor-intensive repair work because several hundred feet of wire need to be replaced and the location where we are working is extremely difficult to access due to the rugged terrain," NSTAR spokesman Caroline Pretyman said. Eight crews are working on repairs and Pretyman said power should be restored around 3 p.m. Manomet Transfer Station is only taking white items at this time, such as refrigerators and TVs. All other items are being accepted at Cedarville Transfer Station.
