1. The Relay for Life of Greater Plymouth will kick off its annual “walk around the clock” to fight cancer at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at PartyLite, located at 59 Armstrong Road. Plans for this year’s Relay for Life of Greater Plymouth will be announced at the kickoff celebration. In addition, the Relay for Life Kickoff will provide information on what local people can do to combat this terrible disease. 1. The Plymouth Public Library hosts a Harry Potter Book Cub for children ages 9-12 from 4-5 p.m. in the Children's Room at the Main Branch. Seal deaths on the Massachsuetts coast are linked to a strain of influenza similar to the bird flu.
If you haven't received a flu shot yet, this story might change your mind since it involves adorable animals. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced recently that an unusual number of seal deaths in the past few months were caused by influenza. According to a Boston Globe story "A flu virus similar to one found in birds but not previously detected in harbor seals was the cause of five of 162 recent deaths of the marine animals off the New England coast..." The flu can cause death in people with weak immune systems and knock out a relatively healthy person for a week or more.
