Bank of America to Close Downtown Branch

Bank of America, the largest bank in Massachusetts, will close its downtown Plymouth branch in March.

Bank of America Corp., the biggest bank in Massachusetts, plans to close four more branches in the state in March. The Charlotte, N.C.-based bank announced that it plans to close offices at Center Plaza in Boston, Chace Road in Freetown, Court Street in Plymouth, and North Main Street in Springfield, FOX25 reports. In addition, the bank plans to eliminate the drive-up window at its branch on Main Street in Westfield. The Massachusetts closures are part of a wider plan by the bank to close 750 of its roughly 5,700 U.S. branches and eliminate at least 30,000 jobs over the next few years, according to FOX.

Are you gearing up to let your fingers do the walking on Cyber Monday?

Plymouth residents who didn’t want to brave the crowds on Black Friday or Small Business Saturday still have one more big chance to save courtesy of Cyber Monday. Similar to the two other major shopping events, Cyber Monday differs in that consumers don’t have to leave the comfort of their own homes (or offices) to take advantage of some pretty big pre-holiday deals. All the bargains laid out for Cyber Monday are for online shoppers only. So how can you find the best deals online this Cyber Monday? While most major retailers that have an online presence aren’t tipping their hats on their online deals just yet, many have splash pages set up that they're inviting shoppers to bookmark in advance of the Nov. 26 shopping holiday. Here are just …

Shaw's, Star Market Announce Job Cuts

Sources say 700 jobs are cut across a number of stores in New England.

Shaw's and Star Market are planning to make some cuts to their workforce in New England. The supermarket chains owned by Supervalu, Inc. are cutting 700 positions across 169 stores, according to an AP story on the Huffington Post. This follows a second-quarter loss for the company, which fired its CEO in July. See the full AP story on Huffington Post. About 90 of the employees have been informed of the decision, and a press release picked up on Daily Finance indicates the rest will be notified over the next several days. The company announced that the layoffs do not "impact Shaw's overall commitment to the communities it serves." See the full press release on Daily Finance.  At this time, sources do not indicate how these cuts specifically…

'The Original' Farmers' Market Thrives in New Location

The Plymouth Farmers' Market changed location, but nothing else has in the midst of a succesful summer.

Barbara Anglin was worried that a new location and new competition would do serious damage to the farmers' market she's managed and grown over the past nine years. But she's happy to say she was wrong. "It's been crazy," she said during a break at last Thursday's market at its new location on a grassy field at Plimoth Plantation. "It's like the old times when the parking lot was full and people actually had to wait to get in." Anglin credits the support of the farmers and producers who stood by her last year, and the 600-plus people who submitted a petition supporting Anglin's market to the Board of Selectmen. "It's all due to the the people who have stood by us," Anglin said.

I finally stopped in at Stephen's Field to check out the market; knew there had been some flap over it. Couldn't miss the competing signage. So I asked, while I was there, "Which one was the original?" I got some rigmarole about the one down to the Plantation being "for profit" and the one at Stephen's paying in to the town coffers or some such nonsense. Never did answer my question...so I knew. …   more ›

Proposed Law Would Ban All Workplace Abuse

The bill calls for employers to be held liable for any workplace bullying by co-workers or superiors.

The Legislature is looking at expanding the law to protect all employees from bullying and harrassment – regardless of their race, gender or sexual orientation – from not only employers, but from co-workers as well.  According to the Healthy Workplace bill, which passed the House and is now in that chamber's committee for a third reading, upwards of 59 percent of employees experience bullying or abuse on the job.  The bill's sponsors, Rep. Ellen Story, D-Amherst, and Sen. Katherine Clark, D-Melrose, write that this number is four times that of those who experience sexual harrassment.  And if maltreated employees cannot establish that the abuse was motivated by race, gender, age, sexual orientataion or another protected status, they have …
