Police Captain Disciplined After Leaving Gun in Bathroom

A Plymouth Police captain has been suspended without pay for 30 days for leaving his service revolver in a courthouse bathroom where it was stolen.

The Plymouth police captain who left his department issued revolver in the bathroom at the Wareham Courthouse, Jan. 28, will face disciplinary action.

John Rogers will be suspended without pay for 20 days and work another 10 days without pay, he will also no longer be the department's internl affairs investigator. He will also “be fully retrained in the Plymouth Police Department’s Policies & Procedures relative to the proper handling of department-issued weapons.”

According to Police Chief Michael Botieri, the weapon was taken from the courthouse restroom by a subject who was in court that day.

The weapon was retrieved two days later. No other information is available about where the weapon was found. Botieri said the weapon was taken from the courthouse bathroom by someone in court that day, according to the Boston Herald.

“The investigation into the loss of the weapon revealed that it was, in fact, taken from the courthouse rest room by a subject in court that day,” Botieri wrote in a statement.

Rogers is a 28-year veteran of the Plymouth Police Department who currently serves as the department’s operations captain.

“He has always presented himself in a professional manner and is a well-respected law enforcement officer in the area,” Botieri said. “Capt. Rogers has taken full responsibility for his actions and has never been disciplined over his entire career. He also recognizes that his behavior warrants severe disciplinary action.”
