Boston Officer Suspended After Explosives Found in Plymouth Home

Boston Police Officer Kirk Merricks was suspended and placed on paid leave after authorities located and removed explosives from a residence in Plymouth.

The home in which Plymouth officers located explosives on Thursday belonged to a Boston police officer who has since been suspended, Boston.com reported Friday morning.  

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon, when Plymouth police and a Massachusetts State Police bomb squad unit responded to the area of Paddington Way. There, they discovered various explosives inside a residence. 

A homeowner reportedly discovered a "suspicious device" and called police around 2:15 p.m. Thursday, according to Boston.com. Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri told Plymouth Patch Thursday that there was no immediate threat after explosives were found at the home. Crews were still at the scene as of 4:30 p.m. Thursday to secure the area. Authorities also removed items at the request of Plymouth police.

Boston police spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca told Boston.com that Officer Kirk Merricks had been suspended and was placed on paid leave as a result of Plymouth police and other officials locating and removing explosives from a residence in town Thursday, according to the report. 

Internal Affairs is also investigating Merricks, Fiandaca told Boston.com, and it was not immediately clear if Merricks had been arrested or charged after the incident, according to the report
