About the Film -

One of only a handful of films to touch on the events of the Philippine-American War, Amigo is the 17th feature film from Academy Award-nominated writer-director John Sayles. Set in 1900 Philippines, the film is centered around Rafael Dacanay (Joel Torre), a village mayor who comes under pressure when his village is occupied by a squad of U.S. troops commanded by Colonel Hardacre (Chris Cooper). The Americans pressure Rafael to assist them in their mission to exterminate the Filipino guerilla fighters, but Rafael’s brother (Ronnie Lazaro) is the leader of the local guerillas and believes that anyone who cooperates with the Americans is a traitor. Rafael suddenly finds himself in an impossible position, and is forced to make the often deadly decisions of civilians in an occupied country. Mirroring the unresolvable conflicts that are still predominate in society today, Amigo is a powerful drama of friendship, betrayal and violence.
