Study: State's New Tech Tax is Nation's Highest

GOP lawmakers are expected to launch a tax repeal effort on Monday.

Massachusetts' new tax on software services is the highest in the nation, according to a study to be released Monday by The Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, the Boston Herald reports.

The foundation opposes the levy as a job-killing innovation-stifler. The taxpayers' group found that the extension of the state's 6.25 percent sale tax to cover software services creates more of a burden than similar taxes in four other states. Florida, which has no such tax, has already started to woo Bay State companies.

Revenues from the tax would go toward rebuilding Massachusetts' crumbling transportation network. Republican lawmakers plan to launch a repeal effort on Monday, the Herald reports.
