Bites Nearby: Sam's Teriyaki House

A real fortune can be found inside this downtown restaurant.

Sam's Teriyaki House is the new Chinese takeout on the block. While their menu is full of all the standard items you would expect, they can make just about anything else you are craving. Stephanie Lee, who works the front end of the business, explained that the chef is able to prepare dishes that people have had at other Chinese restaurants. Owner Chun Ching Hsu said that the menu is simple for guests.

"I want to make customers happy."

He described his food as "very fresh [and] very good" and pointed out that he uses a high-quality, secret teriyaki sauce in his cooking.

Some of the most frequently ordered items are egg rolls, fried chicken wings, crab Rangoon, fried rice, lo mein, pad Thai, General Tso's chicken and crispy sesame chicken, Lee said.

Also on the menu are dumplings, scallion pancakes, coconut shrimp, seafood hot and sour soup, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Kung Pao and sweet and sour dishes, lobster sauce, tangerine chicken or beef, egg foo yong, chow mein and chop suey. There are vegetable and tofu options as well.

A unique product that Sam's sells is the bubble tea smoothies, which come in seven flavors: watermelon, papaya, mango, Hami melon, strawberry, taro and coconut. The smoothies are a refreshing blended concoction made with cream, a flavored powder and ice. The key ingredient, though, is the gummy "bubbles" of tapioca pearls at the bottom of the cup that shoot up the straw when you take a sip.

"All the customers like it," Lee noted, adding that they are only available for the summer.

Every day from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Sam's has lunch specials, ranging in price from $5.95 to $6.95. Patrons choose fried or white rice, an appetizer and a main course. There are also dinner special combos with fried rice or lo mein, two appetizers and a main course, all for $9.

Sam's is mostly takeout, and does offer delivery.
