Plymouth County’s Senior Corps Volunteers Kick Off Letter Writing Campaign to the Troops

Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, Americans united in a remarkable spirit of patriotism and compassion.  In the twelve years since, Americans have marked the anniversary by joining together to provide service to meet local and national needs.

In the spirit of unity and to pay tribute to the victims, more than a dozen Mayflower RSVP volunteers kicked off a summer long letter writing campaign to service men and women on Monday, July 15 in preparation for the September 11 National Day of Service and Recognition.  They joined forces with other Senior Corps organizations from around Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, whose volunteers will match their letters to care packages for local soldiers.  Those care packages, 1,000 in all, will be assembled on the Rose Kennedy Greenway on September 11.

Mayflower RSVP Executive Director Darcy Lee said of the project, “As members of the Senior Corps of the Corporation for National and Community Service, Mayflower RSVP volunteers embraced the opportunity to honor our service men and women and show them we care through this letter writing project, while also honoring the fallen heroes of September 11.  We are proud we can support our troops and the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund as they support families of military personnel.”

Mayflower RSVP has also partnered with veterans groups, writing groups, the Halifax Council on Aging and independent and assisted living centers, including Stafford Hill, Newfield House, and Golden Living Center in Plymouth and the Village at Proprietors Green in Marshfield.  Volunteers at each of these organizations are writing letters.

She added, “Letter writing will continue throughout the summer onsite at the Mayflower offices or offsite at our partner agencies throughout Plymouth County.  If you are interested in participating as an individual, group, or as an organization, please contact our office.”

In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) with supporting this effort across the country. CNCS provides tools and resources for organizations and individuals to become engaged in service activities, including grants to organizations to support volunteer projects.

Mayflower RSVP, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program for Plymouth County, engages 400 volunteers  with  60 organizations throughout Plymouth County to improve the quality of life for citizens in need.
