PLYMOUTH and MARSHFIELD, MA, ISSUED JULY 11, 2013…There are still some openings for golfers who want to participate in the Sixth Annual Jordyn Cook Epilepsy Fund Golf Tournament, which will take place Monday, July 22, at the Plymouth Country Club, 221 Warren Avenue.

Proceeds from the tournament are expected to help the Fund reach its objective of raising a total of $350,000 to fund Massachusetts General Hospital educational website, “Growing Up With Epilepsy” (www.massgeneral.org/childhoodEpilepsy).

The site is an ongoing resource that includes an introduction to epilepsy, and information about the brain and seizure types; there is valuable information for families of epilepsy patients on diagnosis, causes and treatment. There is additionally a section dedicated to “the whole child,” which addresses learning, behavior, family life, activities and more.

To date, the Fund has contributed $336,000 to this effort; and, according to Peter A. Cook, Jr., President of the Jordyn Cook Epilepsy Fund, they expect to easily reach their goal with this tournament.

Jordyn Cook is 16-year old young lady who lives with epilepsy. She is a student at the May School in Brockton, and gets to spend weekends with her family in Kingston. She and her father, Peter A. Cook, Jr. and their family have said how grateful they are for the generosity of everyone over the years.

Jordyn’s grandfather, Peter Cook Sr. of Marshfield, recounted an amazing act of generosity at last year’s tournament that he said moved him deeply. Last year, retired railroad conductor Joseph Motte of East Bridgewater won the grand raffle prize of $25,000, but turned the entire amount back to the Fund.

Peter Cook Sr. said that their family was so moved by the generosity of this individual that they plan to recognize him at this year’s tournament. “Joe’s story speaks to the selflessness of people who want to help someone in need,” he said, adding, “We were all so touched by his generosity, and of course the generosity of everyone who has helped over these last six years.”

Seizures from epilepsy result in up to 45,000 deaths in the U.S. annually, more than the number from breast cancer. Epilepsy affects more people than Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Muscular Dystrophy and blindness combined.

Because the Fund is so close to achieving its goal, the tournament directors have reduced the prices for participation this year, as a “thank you” to all who have helped in the past. The fee for individual golf is $75, or $300 per foursome. The entry fee includes lunch, golf with cart and a sit-down dinner. Non-golfers who are interested in dinner only can do so at $35 per person.

The format of the tournament is a scramble. Contests will include “Closest to the Pin,” “Longest Driver” and a $25,000 putting contest.

There are also a few sponsorship opportunities remaining. For additional information, please call the Jordan Cook Epilepsy Fund (JCEF) at 781-837-9222 or visit www.jordyncookepilepsyfund.org. The Fund’s offices are located at 475 School Street, Suite 5, Marshfield, MA 02050.
