Recap and analysis of the week in state government.
Like pieces of a puzzle that don't quite fit together yet, the Big Three may have been separated at birth, but with each incremental step their destinies seem to grow more intertwined. No, we're not talking about those Big Three - Gov. Deval Patrick, Senate President Therese Murray and Speaker Robert DeLeo - though they play major character roles in this thickening plot. Instead, three bills have come to define the early months of the 2013 legislative agenda and resolutions on tax hikes, local road funding and the annual state budget continue to be elusive and dependent on one another. Patrick spent the early part of his week welcoming British Prime Minister David Cameron to Boston for a few quick meetings and a visit to the Copley …

All flushing will begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue as late as 8 p.m.
The Water Division will be flushing hydrants in the Cedarville pressure zone this week. The Cedarville pressure zone encompasses all areas south of house number 1650 State Road to the Bourne town line and all the side streets. The hydrant bonnets and caps are painted blue in this zone. All flushing will begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue as late as 8 p.m. The Water Division estimates that the flushing in Cedarville will require six days to complete. Customers may notice a severe drop in pressure while the hydrants are flowing. Some discoloration of the water may occur when the hydrants nearby are being flushed. If this occurs, wait until the flushing is over, then run cold water from the faucet nearest the water meter for several minutes. …

Recap and analysis of the week in state government.
Massachusetts' problem is now Virginia's. After a macabre, around-the-clock stakeout of a Worcester funeral home this week by frenzied reporters and furious protestors, the remains of alleged Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev were secreted out of central Massachusetts and buried in a small Muslim cemetery in rural Virginia. No cemetery in Massachusetts, or public official for that matter, wanted Tsarnaev's body. And Gov. Deval Patrick just seemed relieved the tense standoff was over. "No. I have enough to do," Patrick said, when asked if he wished he had gotten involved to end the theatrics sooner. The April 15 attacks on the finish line of the Boston Marathon threw Beacon Hill policymakers off stride, quieting the raging debate …

Results from a recent executive survey ranked Massachusetts 47th for business.
A CEO magazine ranks Massachusetts as one of the worst states in the nation for business. Chief Executive Magazine ranked Massachusetts 47th based on a survey of corporate leaders. Survey respondents reported the Bay State is one of the worst for taxation and regulation. The state Republican Party is pointing to the survey and saying that Gov. Deval Patrick and the Democratic-led Legislature are bad for the economy and business. What do you think about Massachusetts’ business climate? Is this a good state in which to do business? Let us know in the comments section.

The Plymouth Selectmen will set the rates for the new curbside pickup program and single-stream recycling. The rates are expected to be much lower than the current rate of $186.
The Board of Selectmen will set the rates for the new curbside trash pickup program at its meeting tonight, and the rates will be more than $100 less than the current rates. There are several options for the proposed rates: "The current dump sticker is $186. Private haulers cost anywhere from $400 to $700," Selectman Belinda posted on an earlier Plymouth Patch article. "What the town is offering is considerably less expensive than what is being charged now." And with curbside you get single-stream recycling. That means every recyclable item goes into one container -- paper. plastic, bottles, cardboard all in one container. That makes recycling very easy. Plymouth currently recycles at a level of 18 to 20 percent. PAYT and single-stream …

The town is encouraging residents to recycle by requiring those who use the transfer stations to dispose of their trash in designated orange trash bags.
Be prepared to see orange trash bags on the shelves when doing your grocery shopping. Stating July 1, residents who currently use one of Plymouth's transfer stations will be required to place their trash in orange trash bags as part of the town's new Pay-as-you-throw program. The new program goes into effect in July, and will be fully operational beginning next January. Starting then residents will have two choices: Dispose their trash at the Manomet transfer station, or join the automated curbside trash pickup service with single-stream recycling. The PAYT bags are for solid waste only and not recyclable items. Recyclable items will continue to be disposed of at the transfer stations as they are now. The new Plymouth orange trash bags …

What will they do for people who live down the many dead-end, dirt, one lane roads? Will those big trash trucks get down those roads? What about when those roads are not plowed out in the winter? Also, 30 gallon bags can get very heavy. Will there be someone to help the disabled & ederly at the transfer stations?   more ›
