I worked one Christmas season at Edgar's Department Store in Brockton, where the ghost of James Edgar roamed the inventory like the Dickens. The first department store Santa, he invented the red suit, the white beard and the hohoho in 1890. Now, 121 years later, I celebrate Hanukkah with my step-son (his father is Jewish), Soltice with my wife and Christmas with my sons whenever they get free from their obligations in NYC. On Christmas day, I'll read "A Child's Christmas in Wales" aloud to myself or to anyone who cares to listen. Christmas Eve, I will listen for gentle hoofs on the roof in that holy silence.
