Bites Nearby: Metro's Cafe

It doesn't get any closer to home than at this Manomet eatery.

In the back of Metro's Cafe in Manomet is the "Celebrity Wall," full of photographs, newspaper clippings and personal notes and autographs left by some of the more well-known patrons who have stopped by over the years, including former Patriots player Rick Cash, former U.S. Rep. William Delahunt and singer and actor Donnie Wahlberg. Even two soap opera stars dined here, owner Cindi Metro says, who later presented her with an orange teapot, to add to her collection.

Below the wall is a bookshelf with toys and activities for the younger set. And by the front door are the names of customers who have passed on.

Adding to the charm of Metro's are the mismatched mugs adorning the tables. The owner explained that they have been donated by customers.

"We know everybody's name," Metro says, who described the cafe as "very homey and very friendly." She added that a number of people have commented how they feel like they are in their kitchen when they come in.

Everything is made from scratch here, including the hash and pancakes, Metro said. She also said she does her own baking.

In addition to the guests feeling welcomed, Metro said she wants her food to be "just like something that mom made."

Paul Bayides, of Sandwich, complimented the staff and food at Metro's after finishing his meal. He added that the prices are reasonable and that the carrot cake is "awesome."

An all-day breakfast and lunch is available at Metro's. Each day there are three breakfast and three lunch specials, the owner noted, and over the course of a week, American chop suey, chicken pot pie, meatloaf and fish are offered.

Metro told how she was a local baker who wanted to open her own bakery, when she came across a ready-to-go restaurant off of State Road. She and her sister put their money together and opened the cafe eight years ago in memory of their father Charlie Metro, who had died the year before.

While her sister departed the business five years ago, Metro continues to feed locals and visitors alike. Breakfast choices include "The Bomb-lette," a steak bomb sandwich made into an omelet, baked beans, homemade cornbread, banana chocolate chip pancakes and Portuguese sweet bread French toast.

Lunch includes salads, wraps, sandwiches and burgers. There is also a kid's menu.

Metro's Cafe is located at 775 State Road and is open Monday through Saturday 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Sunday 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. Call (508) 224-9676 to order takeout.
