Athlete of the Week: Vicky Fitzgerald

Plymouth South's Vicky Fitzgerald is our first spring season Athlete of the Week.

Many high school athletes set goals like winning a state championship, breaking a points record, or making the varsity squad. However a few athletes set more personal, harder-to-define goals, such as showing consistent improvement on a daily basis.

The Panthers’ Vicky Fitzgerald is one such athlete. Fitzgerald opts out of comparing herself to others, and instead chooses to focus on constantly improving in each of her events.

Because of her work ethic, it’s not difficult to understand why her track and field coach Jeremy Adelmann fully expects Fitzgerald to be a leader during this upcoming season.

Aside from her role as a track and field captain, Fitzgerald also has her eye on a career in the fashion industry. Who can blame her?

Other than track and field, what sports do you play? Are you a captain of any other teams?

I was captain of the cross country team junior and senior year, and was captain of indoor track and outdoor track senior year.

What is your favorite moment in your athletic career? Could you describe it for me?

The best memories of my athletic career would be each of the moments where I've improved my race times or have improved my “personal bests” in any event. Also, being recruited for a Division 1 college team is another one of my favorite moments.

What are you future athletic goals? How about your future personal/career goals?

My future athletic goals include a successful college track career, and improving in my events (sprints, hurdles, jumps). My personal goal is to be an editor, or the head of a publishing firm.

What makes a successful team captain? How do you personally lead and motivate your team?

To be a successful team captain, you need to be able to relate to your teammates-not just boss them around. They need to enjoy their captains, and not see them as a figure who just gives orders. I’d say that I have been more friendly and interactive with my team, and have lead them by showing, rather than telling.

Are you planning on going to college? Where and why?

I'm going to Manhattan College. I really want to go to New York City, major in English and run track for a talented team. This school met all of my guidelines.

What are some other things you enjoy, besides athletics?

Other interests I have include writing and fashion. I really want to work in the publication sector of the fashion industry (magazines, etc.).

What motivates you?

My main motivation comes from my desire to improve, which inspires me to work as hard as I can in order to improve.

Anyone you would like to thank? Say hello to?

I'd like to thank my coaches who have helped me to reach the level I am currently at--coach Tracy and coach Adelmann.
